The Roman summer of 2026 will resonate with great music at Circo Massimo. From June 29 to July 31, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma relocates its summer program from the usual Baths of Caracalla – currently under restoration – to the ancient Roman circus, which can accommodate around 6,000 spectators.
The program ranges from opera to ballet, from symphonic concerts to film in concert, featuring internationally renowned artists and visually striking productions set against the monumental backdrop of Circo Massimo.
The summer 2026 program

The summer season opens on June 29 with Francesco. Un santo scomodo (Francis: An Uncomfortable Saint), a lecture-performance by historian Alessandro Barbero, presenting a vivid and human portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi in his unmistakable style.
Gladiator in Concert with Lisa Gerrard
On July 3 and 4, Gladiator in Concert features the complete screening of Ridley Scott’s epic film with live performance of the soundtrack. On stage is Lisa Gerrard, the unforgettable voice and composer of the original music alongside Hans Zimmer. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma are conducted by Ludwig Wicki, with chorus master Ciro Visco. The five-time Academy Award-winning film is screened in Italian with English subtitles.
Aida by Giuseppe Verdi
At the heart of the program is Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, in the production designed by Davide Livermore and first staged at the Opera di Roma in January 2023. Verdi’s masterpiece comes to a large open-air venue for the first time, perfect for showcasing the cinematic allusions and visionary aspects of the production.
In the title role are Elena Stikhina (July 12, 26, 28), Yolanda Auyanet (15, 18), and Aleksandra Kurzak (22). Soprano Angela Meade (12, 22, 26) exceptionally takes on the mezzo-soprano role of Amneris, alternating with Valentina Pernozzoli (15, 18, 28). Fabio Sartori (12, 18, 26) sings Radamès, alternating with Luciano Ganci (15, 22, 28). Amonasro is performed by Ernesto Petti (12, 15, 18, 26, 28) and Ludovic Tézier (22), while Alex Esposito takes the role of Ramfis.
The Orchestra dell’Opera di Roma is conducted by Daniele Callegari. Sets by Giò Forma, costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, lighting by Fiammetta Baldiserri, and videos by D-Wok. Chorus master Ciro Visco.
Roberto Bolle and Friends
On July 14, Roberto Bolle and Friends returns, featuring Italy’s ballet star alongside internationally acclaimed dancers. The evening alternates between historic pieces from the great classical repertoire and contemporary creations, offering an encounter between different styles and languages of dance.
Romeo and Juliet and Carmina Burana
Also on the program are Romeo and Juliet in the celebrated choreography by John Cranko, performed by the Corps de Ballet of the Opera di Roma, and Carmina Burana by Carl Orff conducted by Wayne Marshall with video installation by Anagoor.
