Rome summer · The best time to travel

There are school vacations from mid-June and that’s a good thing, because it’s too hot to study in buildings without air conditioning. Many Romans rent a house by the sea in June and go to work in the city during the day.

In August the city becomes even quieter because many companies and offices are closed for at least two weeks. There is little traffic during this time and the attractions are more accessible. In August, for example, you don’t need to pre-order for papal audiences.

Summer weather in Rome

In summer, the maximum temperatures in Rome are regularly above 30°C and the minimum temperatures are rarely below 20°C. Grasses and meadows turn brown. When choosing accommodation, air-conditioned rooms are recommended. A regular breeze moves through the city and the temperatures are not uncomfortable in the shade. Nevertheless, you should have a sun hat or a parasol with you for protection. There are many watering spots with good cool drinking water.

Attention! When visiting the sacred sites, including the catacombs and papal audiences, the shoulders and knees must be covered, even on hot summer days.

How to really enjoy Rome in summer

Summer in Rome morning at the Vittoriano

In the early morning the city is calm and empty. The sunrise offers wonderful pictures and maybe you will meet a wedding couple at the photo shoot. Early morning is also the best time to jog.

When planning your day, you should take care not to walk around in the heat of the afternoon. You should plan rest periods or a visit to a park, a swimming pool or a trip to the sea.

The best way to get around on two wheels is by e-bike or Vespa; on four wheels there are golf carts, hop on hop off buses and public transport. The luxurious variant is a sightseeing tour in the air-conditioned luxury limousine.

A lively and colorful nightlife develops after sunset. Traditional festivals and events along the banks of the Tiber provide variety.

What’s going on in summer in Rome

Around mid-June, the “Estate Romana” begins with open-air cinema and numerous concerts, including the “Rock in Rome” concert series. On the banks of the Tiber in the evening there are pop-up bars and restaurants.

Excursions in the area

Rome has a beautiful environment. Romans use especially the weekends for trips to the sea or mountains. There are many traffic jams many places are crowded. Therefore, it is better to go during the week when there is less traffic.

You can reach many destinations by public transport. Of course, it is more convenient to rent a car.

Trips to the sea

Ladispoli, Santa Severa and Santa Marinella are very nice seaside resorts in the north of Rome. To do this, take the FL5 train line, which runs from Ostiense, Trastevere and San Pietro stations to Civitavecchia. A 3-zone ticket is sufficient for Ladispoli, and 4 zones for the locations of the two saints.

Ostia antica July

It is very easy to get to Ostia Lido. A ticket for city traffic is sufficient for the journey and on the way you can visit the excavations of the old port city of Ostia Antica.

Formia is very beautiful in the south of Rome. The journey from Roma Termini takes around 90 minutes.

Trips to the mountains

The most famous summer residence of the Romans is Castel Gandolfo. Here the popes spent the summer at around 400 m. Pope Francis, on the other hand, remains in Rome and the palace and gardens in Castel Gandolfo can be visited.

You can get to Castel Gandolfo by train from Roma Termini or from Ciampino with a 3-zone ticket. The train station is on the volcanic hill between Lake Albano and the village. On hot summer days the lake is especially inviting. You can swim, go for a ride on the pedal boat or just lie in the sun.

Very nice on hot days is also the Villa D’Este in Tivoli with its impressive water features. The huge fountains, fed by the Aniene River, create a pleasantly cool breeze. Further down the valley are the remains of Villa Adriana, rural seat of government for Emperor Hadrian. The villa, however, is very hot in the summer. Protect yourself from the sun and take plenty of water.

Day trips

With the high-speed trains that are punctual to the minute, Florence and Naples are only around 1 ½ hours away. With our tips you can put together your own day tour or book an organized tour. Take a day to visit the excavations at Pompeii and see Vesuvius, still active today, which buried the city under its ashes.
