In 1977, the abolition of several church holidays was agreed at that time between the entrepreneurs and the communist trade unions, in order to avoid the multiplicity of bridge days with corresponding production interruptions.
Many of these holidays have fallen into oblivion in Italy, especially the Pentecost, after Pentecost Monday was abolished as a holiday.

Saturday 6 January: Epiphany – there is “La Befana”, the witch
Saturday 10 February: Carnival in Rome – working day
Friday 16 February: Chinese New Year – working day. However, the celebration of the Chinese New Year in Rome in the city center will take place on the 10th of February.
Monday 19 March: St. Joseph – father’s day. This is a normal working day
25 March: Palm Sunday
30 March: Good Friday – working day
01 April: Easter
02 April: Easter Monday – “Pasquetta” a classic day for trips and family visits
Saturday 21 April: Rome birthday – normal working day
Wednesday 25 April: anniversary of the liberation from fascism – national holiday
Tuesday 1 May: Labour – day national holiday
13 May (2nd sunday in May): mother’s day
Saturday 2 June: Day of the Republic – national holiday
Friday 29 June: Peter and Paul – Feast of the patron saints of Rome – local holiday
Wednesday 15 August: Ferragosto – Maria Ascension Day – national holiday and key point of summer vacation time
Thursday 1 November: All Saints
Saturday 8 December: Maria conception – national holiday
Tuesday 25 December: Christmas – national holiday
Wednesday 26 December: St. Stephen’s day – national holiday
Monday 31 December: New Years Eve – working day
Shop opening at holidays
Most of the shops in the city center and the shopping malls are open seven days a week.
Most shops are closed on
1 January, 25 April, 2 June, 29 June, 15 August, 25 and 26 December
Museums opening at holidays
The Roman museums are closed on the 1st January, at 1st of May and on 25th December.
