In 1977, the abolition of several church holidays was agreed at that time between the entrepreneurs and the communist trade unions, in order to avoid the multiplicity of bridge days with corresponding production interruptions.

Many of these holidays have fallen into oblivion in Italy, especially the Pentecost, after Pentecost Monday was abolished as a holiday.

Sunday 21 April, 2019: Rome birthday

22 April, 2019: Easter Monday – “Pasquetta” a classic day for trips and family visits. The Vatican Museums are closed.

Thursday 25 April, 2019: anniversary of the liberation from fascism – national holiday

Wednesday 1 May, 2019: Labour – day national holiday. The Vatican Museums and the museums of the municipality of Rome are closed.

12 May, 2019 (2nd sunday in May): mother’s day

Sunday 2 June, 2019: Day of the Republic – national holiday

Sunday 9 June, 2019: Pentecost

Friday 21 June, 2019: 25th festival of music

Saturday 29 June, 2019: Peter and Paul – Feast of the patron saints of Rome – local holiday

Thursday 15 August, 2019: Ferragosto – Maria Ascension Day – national holiday and key point of summer vacation time. The Vatican Museums are closed the 14th and 15th August.

Friday 1 November, 2019: All Saints. The Vatican Museums are closed.

Sunday 8 December, 2019: Maria conception – national holiday

Wednesday 25 December, 2019: Christmas – national holiday. All museums are closed.

Thursday 26 December, 2019: St. Stephen’s day – national holiday. The Vatican Museums are closed.

Tuesday 31 December, 2019: New Years Eve – working day

Shop opening at holidays

Most of the shops in the city center and the shopping malls are open seven days a week.

1 January, 25 April, 2 June, 29 June, 15 August, 25 and 26 December

Museums opening at holidays

The Roman museums are closed on the 1st January, at 1st of May and on 25th  December.

The Vatican museums are closed at

Rome holiday calendar 2020

Wednesday 1 January, 2020: New Year. All museums are closed.

Monday 6 January, 2020: Epiphany, public holiday – in the Italian tradition, on this day comes “La Befana”, the witch, and brings the gifts to the children

Saturday 25 January, 2010: Chinese New Year – working day. All information about the Chinese New Year events

Friday 14 February, 2020: Saint Valentine – working day

Saturday 22 February, 2020: Carnival in Rome – working day

Thursday 19 March, 2020: St. Joseph – father’s day. This is a normal working day. The Vatican Museums are closed.
