Bioparco Rome is the oldest zoological garden in Italy. It is located in the northern part of Villa Borghese not far from the Borghese Gallery Museum.
The Rome Zoo is a worthwhile destination. It shows the fauna and flora to be protected and offers scientific and cultural information for all ages.

It was designed by Carl Hagenbeck, famous zoo expert from Hamburg, and opened in 1911. In 1998 it was converted into a biopark – Italian Bioparco. The objectives of the Bioparco of Rome are the protection of endangered species and the introduction of children and young people to nature worth preserving.
Departments
The biopark has a size of around 12 hectares, which is on average the European zoos. But it is well structured so you can see almost everything in a few hours. In the park you will also find a picnic area.
The Biopark is home to around 220 species from all continents. In addition, there is a collection of Mediterranean plants in the Biopark.
The areas of sea lions, Cape penguins, white rhinos, elephants, Sumatran tigers, orangutans, Asiatic lions, the world’s smallest monkeys and Catta lemurs.
The valley of the bears, the chimpanzee village, the giraffe house and the oasis by the lake.
The owl area, the large aviary, the reptile house and the Komodo dragon exhibit.
Thematic events for children take place almost every weekend in the Biopark. The children get playful information about a particular species or topics such as life under water or forests of the world.
Animals of the Bible
The new course entitled “Animals of the Bible” is highly interesting. This initiative was created in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel in Italy, which inaugurated the path on June 23, 2022. The presence of animals and the theme of nature takes a large role in the books of the Bible. In fact, each of the eleven animals is paired with a quote from the bible that you will find on the description for the respective animal.

Admission and opening hours
The Bioparco Rome has the following opening times:
- Summer (end of March – end of October) 9:30 am – 6 pm, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays until 7 pm
- Winter (end of October – end of March) 9:30 am – 5 pm
- The entrance ends one hour before closing
The Bioparco Rome has the following entrance fees:
- Adults: 19 euros
- Children up to 10 years and over 1 meter tall: 16 euros
- Children up to 1 meter in size: free
- The Bioparco Express costs 2 euros
How to get to the Biopark
The Biopark Rome is located onnorth side of the park of Villa Borghese. So you can walk through the villa and arriveto in about 15 minutes from the Pincio above Piazza del Popolo, from the Flaminio metro station or from Via Veneto to the Biopark.
From the Pincio, take the Via delle Magnolie and go straight on until you come to the Biopark. From the Flaminio metro station, take the ascent on Via di Villa Ruffo and continue along Via degli Orti Giustiniani until you reach the gate of the villa. Behind it lies the lake of Villa Borghese with the Temple of Aesculapius. At the end of the fenced park with the lake you have to turn left towards the zoo. From Via Veneto take the footpath to the Borghese Gallery and then turn left at the gallery.
At the biopark, the tram stops lines 3 and 19. The bus is a bit more complicated. If you are coming from the city center, get off at the Pinciana / Museo Borghese stop and walk past the Borghese Gallery to the zoo. On the way back to the city center you can follow the indications for the tram and then find on the right the bus stop Bioparco / Mercadante with the lines 52, 223 and 910.
